Zaglav Beach – Soft Sand & Turquoise Shallows

A short coastal walk from Milna leads to one of the most inviting beaches on Vis: a broad sweep of pale sand meeting clear, shallow Adriatic water.

Zaglav feels different from the island’s dramatic pebble coves. There are no towering cliffs or large white stones beneath your feet. Instead, the beach offers warm sand, a spacious shallow bay and water that shifts between transparent green and luminous turquoise.

It takes a little more effort to reach than nearby Milna Beach—but that final walk helps Zaglav retain its sense of separation from the road and surrounding settlements.

One of Vis’s rare sandy beaches

Most beaches on Vis are composed of pebbles, rocks or broad limestone platforms. Zaglav is one of the exceptions.

Its unusually pale sand gives both the beach and water their distinctive appearance. Sunlight reflects from the sandy seabed, illuminating the shallows and producing beautiful shades of turquoise.

The water remains shallow across a generous part of the bay, making it particularly attractive for families, relaxed swimming and games in the sea.

Soft sand and spacious shallows

Zaglav’s defining experience begins where the sand meets the sea. The gradual entrance allows visitors to walk well into the bay before reaching deeper water.

For children, this creates space to paddle and play. For adults, it means warm shallows, easy swimming and plenty of room to simply remain in the water.

The sandy bottom is generally comfortable underfoot, although small stones and natural material may still be present around parts of the shoreline. As with any natural beach, conditions can change after wind and waves.

Movement through the shallows can temporarily disturb the fine sand and reduce visibility. This is normal and does not indicate poor water quality.

Is Zaglav suitable for families?

The shallow sandy water makes Zaglav one of the island’s more family-friendly swimming locations.

However, parents should consider the full experience—not only the beach itself. Reaching Zaglav requires a walk from Milna along an exposed coastal path, and there is very little natural shade once you arrive.

For families, bring:

• Plenty of drinking water
• High-factor sunscreen
• Sun hats
• A parasol or beach shelter
• Food and snacks
• Lightweight beach equipment
• Comfortable footwear for the approach

Children must still be supervised in and around the sea. Wind, currents and boat traffic can affect even a shallow bay.

How to get to Zaglav Beach

Zaglav cannot be reached directly by car. Visitors normally approach on foot from Milna or arrive by boat.

From Vis town

Drive towards Milna on the southeastern side of the island. Leave your vehicle in or near the settlement, taking care not to obstruct local roads or private access.

From Milna, follow the coastal footpath towards Zaglav.

From Komiža

Drive across the island towards Vis and continue in the direction of Milna. The journey is longer, so allow additional time—particularly during the busy summer season.

The walk from Milna

The walk normally takes approximately 15 minutes. It is not especially long, but the route is exposed to the sun and can become extremely hot during the middle of the day.

The path is natural rather than a formal promenade. Wear secure sandals or light walking shoes, especially when carrying beach bags.

Arriving by boat

Zaglav can also be reached from the sea by private boat, water taxi or an excursion that includes the southeastern coast of Vis.

Arriving by boat avoids the hot walk from Milna and provides a beautiful perspective across the entire bay. Vessels should anchor responsibly and respect designated swimming areas, other boats and the sandy seabed.

If using a water taxi, arrange the return journey in advance. Mobile reception and last-minute availability should not be taken for granted.

Very limited natural shade

This is Zaglav’s most important practical limitation.

The beach has little natural protection from the sun. Shade is generally limited to the terrace of the small restaurant, although the beach gradually begins to fall into shadow later in the afternoon.

A restaurant table should not be treated as your personal all-day beach shelter. Bring a parasol or compact sunshade if you intend to remain for several hours.

Food and refreshments

A small seasonal restaurant operates beside the beach, providing food, drinks and some welcome shade.

Its opening period, menu and hours may change during the year. Outside the main summer season, do not assume it will be operating.

Zaglav has no wide selection of shops or beach services, so carry essential supplies from Vis town or Milna. At a minimum, every visitor should bring sufficient drinking water.

Swimming and activities

Zaglav is best suited to relaxed activities:

• Swimming in the shallow bay
• Playing in the sand
• Family games in the water
• Floating and paddling
• Snorkelling around the rocky sides
• Arriving by kayak or paddleboard
• Quiet sunbathing

The sandy centre contains less visible marine life than rocky areas, so snorkellers should explore around the edges of the bay while remaining aware of boats and underwater rocks.

When is the best time to visit?

Morning

Morning provides cooler conditions for the walk from Milna and increases your chance of finding a quiet place on the sand. The beach receives plenty of early sunshine.

Midday

The water becomes brilliantly illuminated, but the sand and footpath can be extremely hot. Shade is scarce.

Late afternoon

This can be one of the most comfortable times to visit. The beach gradually moves into shade from around 5 p.m., temperatures soften and some daytime visitors begin to leave.

Do not remain so late that you are forced to walk back along an unfamiliar path in darkness.

May, June and September

These months can provide warm weather with fewer visitors. The sea may be cooler, and the restaurant or other seasonal services may have limited opening hours.

Can Zaglav become crowded?

Although Zaglav is sometimes described as a place to escape the crowds, that claim needs qualification.

It is one of the most attractive sandy beaches on Vis, and its family-friendly shallows make it popular during July and August. The walk prevents direct car access, but it does not guarantee an empty beach.

Arrive early or visit later in the afternoon if atmosphere matters more than maximum sunshine.

Facilities at Zaglav

Depending on the season, visitors may find:

• A small restaurant
• Food and refreshments
• Limited shade on the restaurant terrace
• Possible seasonal beach equipment

Visitors should not expect the broad range of facilities found at a resort beach. Public toilets, showers, changing rooms, lifeguards and rental services may be unavailable.

Bring what you need and take all rubbish away with you.

A softer side of Vis

Zaglav does not offer the monumental cliffs of Stiniva or the silver stones of Srebrna. Its beauty comes from something gentler: warm pale sand, spacious shallows and water coloured by sunlight reflecting from the seabed.

The walk from Milna asks for just enough effort to make arriving feel rewarding. Drop your bags, cross the hot sand and step into the cool turquoise water—the reason for coming becomes immediately clear.
