Mamma Mia! Here we go again

When Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again premiered in 2018, millions of viewers fell in love with its sun-drenched villages, crystal-clear sea and spectacular Mediterranean scenery.

What many people don’t realise is that these beautiful locations are not in Greece—they are on the Croatian island of Vis.

During the spring and summer of 2017, the cast and crew spent several months filming across the island, using Vis Town, hidden beaches, quiet bays and the island’s unspoiled landscapes as the backdrop for one of the world’s most beloved musicals.

Today, fans from around the world visit Vis to experience the places they saw on screen.

Why Was Vis Chosen?

Vis is one of Croatia’s most authentic islands.

For decades it was closed to foreign visitors while serving as a military island, which helped preserve its traditional architecture, peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty. Unlike many Mediterranean destinations, Vis has remained largely untouched by large-scale development.

Its stone houses, narrow streets, fishing harbours, vineyards and turquoise waters created exactly the setting the filmmakers were looking for.

Very little had to be changed—Vis was already picture-perfect.

One of the film’s most memorable locations is Barjoška Bay on the southern coast of the island. The dramatic staircase leading down to the sea has become a favourite stop for movie fans visiting Vis.

Stiniva Cove

The famous Stiniva Cove, surrounded by towering cliffs, also appears in the film and is now one of Croatia’s most iconic beaches.

Srebrna Beach

Known for its smooth white pebbles and crystal-clear water, Srebrna Beach provided another beautiful coastal setting during filming.

The Cast on Vis

The production brought an impressive cast to the island, including Lily James, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Andy Garcia and Cher.

Many stayed on Vis throughout filming, and locals still enjoy sharing stories about meeting the actors in cafés, restaurants and along the waterfront. Island residents also worked as extras and assisted the production behind the scenes.
