The final approach is narrow and more remote than the roads leading to the island’s developed villages. Although the Tourist Board describes the bay as approachable by an asphalt trail, road surfaces and local conditions can change. Drive slowly and check current access before setting out.

Parking space close to the bay is limited. Never block the road, turning areas or access to local properties.

From Komiža

From Komiža, drive across the island towards Podšpilje and Marinje Zemlje before following the local approach towards Mala Travna.

Because the route includes smaller island roads, allow more time than suggested by the distance alone. A scooter or small car may be convenient, but inexperienced scooter riders should be particularly cautious on steep or uneven sections.

Arriving by Boat

Mala Travna is also popular with visitors arriving by small boat. Approaching from the sea reveals the bay’s rocky terraces and wonderfully clear water.

The bay is compact, so boats must enter carefully and respect swimmers, other vessels and local moorings. If you are unfamiliar with its underwater conditions, arrive with an experienced local skipper.

Is Mala Travna Suitable for Children?

Families can enjoy Mala Travna, but it is less convenient than Stončica or Grandovac. The rocky terrain, cooler water, limited space and remote setting make it better suited to confident swimmers and older children comfortable around natural shorelines.

Parents with small children should consider the access, lack of extensive facilities and limited shade before visiting. Bring everything the family will need and supervise children closely around both the water and sloping rocks.

Above the bay is a small, rustic konoba associated with Croatian writer and island resident Senko Karuza. It has become known for unhurried meals based on available local ingredients, particularly fish and seafood.

This should not be treated like an ordinary walk-in beach restaurant. Opening arrangements may be seasonal, meals can take several hours and advance reservations are strongly recommended. Mala Travna is a natural and relatively isolated bay. Visitors should not depend upon finding public toilets, showers, changing rooms, equipment rental or regular refreshment services.

Bring sufficient drinking water, food and sun protection. Mobile reception may also be less reliable in secluded coastal locations.

Most importantly, take everything away with you. Small bays have limited capacity to absorb litter, and even a few careless visitors can leave a visible impact.

The Best Time to Visit

Morning offers a quieter atmosphere and more comfortable temperatures for the journey. The bay can also be beautiful later in the afternoon, when the limestone begins to glow in the softer sunlight.

Conditions on the southern coast depend upon the wind. Check the weather before visiting, particularly if arriving by boat or planning a longer swim.

During July and August, Mala Travna may receive visiting boats and restaurant guests. For greater tranquillity, consider June, September or a weekday outside the busiest holiday period.
